Music Ministry at First Baptist Church

The Music Ministry at First Baptist Church seeks to honor the Creator of Music through use of our voices and instruments.  We strive to give God the glory the best way that we are able.  We strive to not only bless God in our worship, but also to minister to the congregation through our music.  The Minister of Music places more importance on the needs of the musicians over the needs of the Music Ministry.

Our worship music is of a more traditional flavor.  Hymns are used in worship; however, we look for fresh ways to sing them and choruses are sometimes added.   Worship is carefully and prayfully planned as we work to make worship creative, thoughtful, and meaningful.

First Baptist Church offers a full-graded music program for all ages.

Music Opportunities for Children (Age 3-Grade 1)

  • Wee Ones Choir  Wednesday evenings (September-May) 5:30-6:00 p.m. for ages 3-4.  This important choir introduces the preschooler to the joy of music through movement and singing games.
  • Cherub Choir  Wednesday evenings (September-May) 5:30-6:05 p.m. for Kindergarteners and First Graders. The goal of this choir is to offer age-appropriate activities that develop or foster music skills and concepts, music literacy, enjoyment of music, self-esteem and spiritual development.  This is accomplished through singing, playing instruments, movement, and learning about Christian worship and the songs of our faith.

Music Opportunities for Children (Grades 2-5)

  • Young Musicians  Wednesday evenings (September-May) 6:00-6:30 p.m. for Grades 2-5.  Children will learn to be worship leaders and develop a greater understanding of the role of music in the worship service.  They will study hymns, improve singing and music reading skills, be exposed to many different instruments including Orff instruments, rhythm instruments, Boom Whackers, and digital instruments.  Children in this choir will be given the opportunity to attend a one-day Children's Choir Festival in High Point, NC each year.

Music Opportunities for Youth (Grades 6-12)

  • Youth Choir  Sunday evenings (September-May) 5:00-6:00 p.m.  Our youth sing traditional and contemporary music.  They are given opportunities to sing in worship a few times throughout the year.  Music reading skills and worship planning are taught during rehearsals.  Free voice lessons are given at the church by the Minister of Music for all those in Senior High.  Call for availability.   Members of the Youth Choir are also given the opportunity to attend Youth Choir Festival each year which is an over-night event in Greensboro, NC. and participate in a Youth Musical.
  • Second Ringers Handbell Choir  Sunday evenings (September-May) 4:15-5:00 p.m.  Youth are given further exposure to the art of handbell ringing.  Opportunities for playing in worship are given.  This choir is not an auditioned group and no experience is necessary.

Music Opportunities for Adults

  • Sanctuary Choir   Rehearsals on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-8:30 p.m.  (We have an abbreviated rehearsal schedule in the summer months.)  The Sanctuary Choir sing music for our worship services from many different music styles, but we concentrate on traditional music.  Occasionally the choir will take opportunities to sing beyond the walls of the church.  This group is a very caring group who takes their responsibility as worship leaders very seriously; however, they love to have fun...especially in rehearsals!  It is a non-auditioned group of singers.
  • First Ringers Handbell Choir  Wednesday evenings (September-May) 6:30-7:15 p.m.  This choir is a group of experienced adult ringers.  They play often for our worship services.  The choir periodically will perform concerts and has two different CD's recorded.  Membership to this group is by invitation only.
